FOREVERSMILES: The Key to Keeping Your Child’s Smile Perfect for Life

A Lifetime of Smiles Starts with Retainers

Congratulations! If your child has completed their braces or Invisalign treatment, they’ve taken a big step toward a confident, healthy smile. But the journey doesn’t stop here—wearing a retainer is essential to keep their teeth from shifting back.

At Tots to Teens Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we offer the FOREVERSMILES Retainer Program to ensure your child’s new smile stays straight for life. Whether you visit our locations in San Antonio, Laredo, Lytle, Rittiman, or Kerrville, our expert orthodontic team is here to help!

Why Are Retainers So Important?

Even after months (or years!) of orthodontic treatment, teeth have a natural tendency to shift back due to:

Natural Ligament Memory – The ligaments holding teeth in place “remember” their original positions.
Jaw Growth & Development – As your child grows, their jaw shape changes, which can affect alignment.
Daily Habits & Pressure – Speaking, chewing, and even teeth grinding (bruxism) can cause slow movement.

Skipping a retainer—even for a short time—can undo all the hard work put into straightening your child’s teeth.

How the FOREVERSMILES Retainer Program Works

Our FOREVERSMILES Retainer Program at Tots to Teens Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics ensures that your child’s new smile lasts for years to come.

Types of Retainers We Offer

Essix Retainers – Clear, removable, and virtually invisible (perfect for Invisalign patients!).
Hawley Retainers – Durable acrylic and wire retainers that allow for small adjustments.
Fixed (Bonded) Retainers – A thin wire placed behind the teeth for long-term retention.

Why Choose FOREVERSMILES?

Custom-made retainers for a comfortable, perfect fit
Prevents shifting and the need for braces again
High-quality materials that last longer
Multiple locations for easy access to replacement retainers
Flexible payment plans & insurance options

How Long Should My Child Wear a Retainer?

Orthodontic care doesn’t end when braces come off! Here’s what to expect:

First 6 Months: Full-time wear (except for eating & brushing).
After 6 Months: Nighttime wear (for life!).
Long-Term: Lifelong nighttime wear to prevent shifting over time.

If a retainer feels tight after skipping a night or two, that means the teeth are already shifting!

Signs It’s Time for a Retainer Replacement

Retainers don’t last forever. Here’s when you need a new one:

Cracks, bends, or warping
Doesn’t fit properly or feels too tight
Bad odor even after cleaning
Teeth are slightly shifting

How to Care for Your FOREVERSMILES Retainer

Help your child’s retainer last as long as possible with these care tips:

Rinse after each use – Removes bacteria buildup.
Brush gently – Use a soft toothbrush and mild soap (avoid toothpaste, which can scratch the surface).
Store in a case – Prevents damage or getting lost.
Avoid heat – High temperatures can warp plastic retainers.
Replace when necessary – Old or broken retainers won’t be effective.

Frequently Asked Questions About Retainers

1. What happens if my child forgets to wear their retainer?

Teeth will start shifting back quickly. If it feels tight, encourage them to wear it full-time for a few days to correct minor movement.

2. How long do retainers last?

With proper care, retainers can last several years, but should be replaced if they become worn, loose, or cracked.

3. Can my child eat with their retainer on?

No. Retainers should be removed while eating (except for bonded retainers).

4. What if my child loses their retainer?

Call us ASAP to get a replacement retainer before their teeth shift!

5. Do you offer payment plans for retainers?

Yes! We accept PPO insurance and offer flexible payment plans to make retainers affordable.
