What to Do in Case of a Dental Emergency

In the event of a dental emergency, it is important to act quickly and calmly. Here are the steps to take:

  1. Call Us to Book an Appointment ASAP
Contact Tots to Teens Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics immediately to schedule an emergency appointment. Our team will prioritize your child's needs and provide guidance on what to do until you can get to our office.
  2. Use Over-the-Counter Pain Relief
To help manage pain and discomfort, give your child an appropriate dose of over-the-counter pain medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Be sure to follow the dosage instructions on the medication label.
  3. Use Ice Packs
Apply an ice pack to the affected area to reduce swelling and numb the pain. Wrap the ice pack in a cloth or towel to avoid direct contact with the skin and apply it for 15-20 minutes at a time.

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Toothache

A persistent toothache can be a sign of a serious dental issue such as infection or decay. If your child is experiencing a toothache, contact us immediately. We will diagnose the cause of the pain and provide appropriate treatment to relieve it.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If your child has a knocked-out tooth, time is critical. Rinse the tooth gently with water, avoiding touching the root. If possible, place the tooth back into the socket and hold it in place with gauze or a clean cloth. If you cannot reinsert the tooth, place it in a container of milk or saline solution and bring it to our office immediately.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

If your child has a broken or chipped tooth, rinse their mouth with warm water and apply an ice pack to the affected area to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces of the tooth and bring them with you to our office. We will assess the damage and determine the best course of treatment.

Loose or Dislodged Tooth

If a tooth is loose or has been pushed out of position, contact us right away. Try to gently reposition the tooth into its proper alignment without forcing it. Our dentists will stabilize the tooth and provide treatment to ensure it heals correctly.

Soft Tissue Injuries

Injuries to the gums, lips, or tongue can cause significant bleeding and discomfort. Clean the area gently with water and apply pressure with a clean cloth or gauze to stop the bleeding. Use an ice pack to reduce swelling and contact us for further evaluation and treatment.
