Your First Appointment with Tots to Teens
If your child has never been to a dentist before, we are honored that you have chosen our team and our practice to care for their dental needs. We pride ourselves on offering high-quality, compassionate dental care for kids in San Antonio and surrounding areas. In an effort to make your first appointment with us easier, we’ve outlined some information that first-timers usually ask about. If you have any other questions for us, we recommend checking out our FAQ page or getting in touch with one of our friendly front office staff members for more information.
When should I make my child’s appointment?
If you need to make an appointment with our team right away due to an emergency, please call our office at 210-899-5064. If you need to schedule a biannual cleaning and exam for your child, you may also call our office or use our contact form to find a convenient time to come and see us. You are welcome to make an appointment with our team any time between eight and five, Monday through Friday. However, we often recommend scheduling early morning appointments for younger children, because they tend to be more cooperative earlier in the day. For older kids, any time during the day or after school works well, as dentist appointments are considered excused absences at most schools.
How can I help my child stay calm during their appointment?
The hygienists and dentists on our team are no strangers to dealing with anxious children. Dental anxiety is very common among kids and adults, so there is no need to worry if your child is very apprehensive about attending dental appointments. We always recommend that parents speak to their kids about dentistry in a positive way and avoid using words like “shot,” “painful,” and “needle.” We use the “Tell-Show-Do” method to walk each child through what they can expect during their treatment step-by-step, and we explain what each dental tool does in a way that they can understand. If your child experiences dental anxiety regardless, we do offer kid-friendly dental sedation that can help relieve their anxious thoughts during their appointments.
Do I need to make an appointment for my child to see a dentist?
If your child has never been to our practice before and you think a short tour around our office would help them feel better about their upcoming appointment, you are more than welcome to stop by for a quick visit! Nervous children can definitely benefit from meeting the friendly faces who are going to be working with them in the future and learning that there is nothing to be scared of at our office. We also accept emergency walk-in appointments for dental issues like knocked-out teeth, excessive dental bleeding, unbearable toothaches, and other problems that can’t wait until their next scheduled appointment. We just ask that if you are coming in without an appointment that you call our office in advance so that we know that you are going to be paying us a visit!
