When Do Kids Start Losing Teeth?

At Tots to Teens, our highly qualified team works hard to care for your children and their smiles as they grow and develop. One of the most common questions we get from patients and their parents is: “When do kids start losing their baby teeth?” Today, we want to answer this question and give parents some ideas on how to prepare for that inevitable first wiggling tooth.

When Do Kids Start Losing Teeth?

The “normal” age at which kids start losing teeth has a huge range. Generally, kids lose their first tooth between the ages of 4 and 7. The two front and bottom teeth are usually the first to go, but that too can vary. All children lose teeth in different patterns and at various stages of their development. (Check out this teeth timeline from the American Dental Association for a general range.) But one thing you can be sure of is that as soon as your child gets their first loose tooth, you’ll know right away; we find that our young patients love showing off their wiggly teeth!

What Should I Do with a Wiggly Tooth?

For the more squeamish parents out there, this should come as good news: more often than not, you won’t need to do anything about your child’s loose tooth. They tend to fall out on their own, whether while eating or after some gentle wiggling by your child. Don’t worry if your kids love using their tongue to play with their loose tooth. It’s fine for them to wiggle them around, as long as they don’t vigorously force them out, which can damage their gums. If your little ones prefer wiggling their teeth with their fingers, that’s fine too; just make sure they wash their hands before putting them in their mouth!

How Can I Care for My Child’s Oral Health?

Whether your kids are just starting to lose their baby teeth, barely teething, or have transformed into gap-tooth pre-teens, we’d love to see them! No matter your child’s age, it’s always a good time to make sure their teeth are developing healthy and strong. Along with regular visits to our office for cleanings and exams, be sure your kids are brushing twice daily for two minutes each time, brushing their tongue, and flossing every day.
